Guwahati,1o.05.2026: Himanta Biswa Sarma has been unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislature party following the alliance’s massive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
With this development, Himanta Biswa Sarma is all set to return as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 12.
The NDA legislature party meeting was held in Guwahati on Sunday, where senior leaders and newly elected MLAs extended unanimous support to Sarma’s leadership. The decision comes after the BJP-led alliance secured a decisive mandate in the recently concluded Assembly polls.
Addressing party leaders and supporters after being elected NDA leader, Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the people of Assam for reposing faith in the alliance once again. He stated that the new government would continue to focus on development, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and welfare initiatives across the state.
The NDA’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections is being viewed as a major political achievement for the BJP in the Northeast. Political observers believe the alliance benefited from welfare schemes, infrastructure projects, and strong organizational support across Assam.
Several senior BJP leaders, alliance partners, and party workers attended the legislature party meeting. Celebrations erupted in different parts of Assam soon after the announcement, with supporters gathering outside party offices and distributing sweets.
Himanta Biswa Sarma first took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam in 2021 and has since emerged as one of the prominent political faces of the Northeast region.
The upcoming oath-taking ceremony on May 12 is expected to witness the presence of top BJP and NDA leaders from across the country.
