Suvendu Adhikari in ‘Nayak’ Mode; Massive Administrative Overhaul in First 24 Hours

12.05.2026;KOLKATA : In a whirlwind first 24 hours after assuming office, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has initiated a high-speed administrative cleanup, earning comparisons to the cinematic “Nayak.” From stripping high-profile security covers to clearing long-pending border projects, the new administration has sent a clear message: the era of the previous regime is over.

Major Decisions: Safety, Justice, and Sovereignty

The first Cabinet meeting at Nabanna was marked by a series of “action-first” policies aimed at law and order and national security.

  • Security Downgrade: In a symbolic move, the extensive “area security” and Z+ blanket surrounding TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee has been significantly withdrawn. The heavy police kiosks and barricades that once restricted public access are being removed to restore normal traffic flow.

  • Justice for Martyrs: The government has approved immediate legal aid and state support for 321 families who lost members to political violence in recent years. This fulfills a core campaign promise to support “martyrs of democracy.

  • Border Security Priority: Reversing years of delay, the Cabinet approved the immediate transfer of land to the BSF for fencing the Bangladesh border. The process is slated for completion within 45 days to curb illegal infiltration.

  • Zero Tolerance Policy: CM Adhikari announced a “crushing blow” to syndicate Raj. Illegal sand mining, coal smuggling, and extortion networks have been put on notice with “Non-Bailable” action.

The Great Bureaucratic Cleanup

The administration has moved swiftly to “depoliticize” the state machinery.

  • Board Overhaul: All Chairmen and Directors appointed by the previous TMC government in state-run boards, corporations, and cooperatives have been removed.

  • Extension Freeze: All government officers above the age of 60 who were serving on extensions granted by the previous regime have been relieved of their duties immediately.

  • New Leadership: In a significant move, former Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of West Bengal, replacing Dushyant Nariala.

Welfare & Central Integration

West Bengal is officially transitioning to the “Double Engine” model with the rollout of flagship central schemes.

  • Annapurna Bhandaar: The state’s new flagship women’s welfare scheme will launch on June 1, 2026. Eligible women will receive ₹3,000 per month via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), effectively replacing and nearly tripling the previous ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ benefits.

  • Central Schemes: Ayushman Bharat, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, and PM Awas Yojana have been greenlit for immediate implementation.

  • Legal Shift: The state has officially moved to implement the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), replacing the colonial-era IPC.

“The previous government withheld development for the sake of politics. Our goal is ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ with a zero-tolerance approach to crime,” — Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
