GUWAHATI: “Sewali”- a pre-Durga Puja event organized by Kolkata Assamese Women’s Welfare Association (KAWWS) concluded at Assam Bhawan in Kolkata on Saturday.
The two-day-long event was inaugurated by Miranda Das, joint secretary, Assam Government. Oli Borah, general manager, North Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFi), attended the event as the guest of honour.
The event kicked off with the felicitation of a few Assamese women, including Rekha Basu Chaliha, Navamalati Chakraborty, Piku Saha for their achievements.
Bringing in the mood of Durga Puja, a cultural programme was also organized with songs and dance by the talented Assamese women living in Kolkata.
At the event, the Assamese women of Kolkata showcased their handmade creations of clothes, food and decorative items.
The people of Kolkata widely applauded the event organised by KAWWA. Celebrities from Kolkata such as tabla maestro Bikram Ghosh, and actor Jaya Seal Ghosh also visited the exhibition Xewali.
KAWWA president Navanita Phukan said that it was an effort by her team and she hoped that this would be an annual event every year before Durga Puja Festival.
The Kolkata Assamese Women’s Welfare Association is a 51-year-old organisation.
The event, Xewali has been projected as a pre-Puja shopping exhibition of Assamese items for Bengali people in Kolkata.
