GUWAHATI: As many as 70 leaders and workers of various political parties, including BPF, UPPL, Gana Shakti, AGP and Lachit Sena joined the Congress party in a mass joining programme organised at Rajiv Bhawan here on Wednesday.
The prominent entrants include former AASU president and BPF general secretary Prabeen Baro, Gana Shakti working president Maheen Hazarika and former minister Pranay Rabha.
Welcoming the new entrants, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh said the Congress-led INDIA block will come to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
“After formation of the government, we will form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which will probe into the corruption cases against the BJP ministers and MLAs and they will be put to jail,” Singh said.
“In Assam, BJP-led government is siphoning the public fund. But there will be a political change in the country. There will be a humiliation defeat of the BJP in the assembly elections in five states slated in November,” Singh said.
“In the 2026 assembly election in Assam, Congress will come to power. All the corrupt ministers and MLAs have to face action,” he said.
Referring to the landscape of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family, the congress leader described Sarma as the number one corrupt chief minister of the country.
Criticising AGP, he said the regional party which was formed due to the sacrifices of the public is now working at the behest of the BJP leaders.
Ecohing a similar opinion, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Bhupen Kumar Bora said the Congress party will come to power in the Centre and the state and initiate action against corrupt leaders of the saffron party.
Bora also called for all new entrants to be united and fight against the anti-people policies of the BJP-led government.
Former AASU president and BPF leader Prabeen Baro said: “It is a call of time for me to join the Congress. The present BJP-led government is indulging in corruption in every sphere of life. Only the Congress party can bring a change to the situation.”
Gana Shakti working president Maheem Hazarika, APCC working presidents Rana Goswami, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Kaaaamalaakhaya Dey Purkayastha, MP Abdul Khaleque, Pradyut Bordoloi and Gaurav Gogoi, leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia, MLAs Rakibul Hussain, former minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, former MP dijen Sarma, and senior leaders of the party were present in the programme.
Earlier, glowing tributes were paid to former chief minister Tarun Gogoi on the occasion of is birth anniversary.
