Imphal ; January 2, 2024:In a significant development, Kuki tribal bodies have announced a total shutdown in all Kuki-Zo areas, effective from January 3, zero hour, in response to the escalating violence in Manipur. The call for a shutdown comes as a collective effort to draw attention to the pressing issues affecting the Kuki community and to demand immediate intervention from authorities.
The Kuki tribal bodies cite a series of incidents and grievances as the catalyst for this decisive action. Recent clashes and tensions have reportedly led to a precarious situation in the region, necessitating a strong response from the Kuki community to safeguard their interests.
The decision for a total shutdown was made after extensive deliberations among various Kuki tribal organizations, which have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the Kuki-Zo areas. The tribal bodies argue that the shutdown is a necessary step to bring attention to the longstanding issues faced by the Kuki community, including land disputes, cultural identity concerns, and perceived neglect by the authorities.
During the shutdown period, all business establishments, educational institutions, and other commercial activities in Kuki-Zo areas are expected to come to a standstill. The tribal bodies have urged the community to participate actively in the shutdown to send a strong message to the concerned authorities.
In a joint statement, the Kuki tribal leaders stated, “We are compelled to take this drastic measure to protect the rights and dignity of the Kuki community. The persistent issues affecting our people must be addressed urgently, and we call upon the relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue to find a lasting solution.”
The tribal bodies have also called for the immediate deployment of security forces to maintain peace and order during the shutdown period. They emphasize that the shutdown is a peaceful protest aimed at drawing attention to the challenges faced by the Kuki community and seeking resolution through dialogue.
The development is expected to draw the attention of the state government, urging them to initiate talks with the Kuki tribal bodies to address the underlying issues and work towards a peaceful resolution. Meanwhile, residents and businesses in Kuki-Zo areas are bracing for the impact of the shutdown, hoping that it serves as a catalyst for positive change in the region.
