Guwahati, February 24, 2025:Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati today to attend the historic ‘Jhumur Binondini’ event, a grand celebration of Assam’s tea garden culture and its rich heritage. The event, organized by the Assam government, witnessed a record-breaking performance by over 8,600 artists showcasing the traditional Jhumur dance at the Sarusajai Stadium.
The cultural spectacle commemorates 200 years of Assam’s tea industry, bringing together dancers and musicians from the tea tribe communities. The performance featured 5,399 female dancers, 2,175 male dancers, and 2,074 musicians playing traditional instruments like the Madal, creating an awe-inspiring visual and rhythmic experience.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi lauded Assam’s cultural legacy and reiterated his government’s commitment to the welfare of tea garden workers. “The tea industry has been the backbone of Assam’s economy and culture for two centuries. Today’s event is a tribute to the dedication and contribution of our tea garden workers,” said the PM.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and diplomats from over 60 countries were also present at the event, further highlighting Assam’s global cultural significance.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who spearheaded the event’s organization, called it a “historic moment” for Assam and announced financial incentives for all participants and trainers. “This is more than just a performance; it is a movement to celebrate and preserve our cultural roots,” he remarked.
The ‘Jhumur Binondini’ event also aimed to set a Guinness World Record for the largest synchronized Jhumur dance performance, putting Assam on the global stage once again.
PM Modi’s visit to Assam also includes the inauguration of the ‘Advantage Assam 2.0’ Investment and Infrastructure Summit on February 25. The summit is expected to attract investments worth Rs 3 lakh crore, positioning Assam as a key industrial and economic hub in Southeast Asia.
With the success of ‘Jhumur Binondini,’ Assam has once again showcased its vibrant culture, reaffirming its place as a center of tradition, resilience, and progress.
