For his second outing at the fashion week, the designer sought inspiration from the Vedas to design a collection titled ‘Hiranyagarbha’.
Acclaimed Indian designer Gaurav Gupta, who has carved a niche for himself with his signature structured and dramatic ensembles, presented his latest collection at the recently concluded Paris Haute Couture Week. For his second outing at the fashion week, he sought inspiration from the Vedas to design a collection titled ‘Hiranyagarbha’. Hiranya translates as golden and garbha as the womb, and Gupta’s collection conceptualised the process of life in varied colours.
“According to the most ancient Indian scriptures, the Vedas, this is where everything started. It’s the beginning of everything, the starting point, the golden light. That very purity of creation is what really excites me,” he said in an Instagram video ahead of the show.
According to the designer, this collection is a journey from birth, transformation, realization, and eventual harmony with the cosmos. “It is a peek into the golden womb, inviting us to embrace the stark light within,” reads the description of the collection.
While Gupta largely stayed true to his aesthetics, he also added a pinch of freshness to his latest collection. From structured capes and flowy floor-length gowns to architectural ruffles and hoods, Gupta’s vibrant designs incorporated several traditional Indian embroidery techniques like zardozi, nakshi, and dabka.
The designer’s show was high on sartorial excellence — both on and off the runway. While the ramp saw models strutting in his eye-catching designs, the audience had American rapper Cardi B and Chinese actor Fan Bingbing donning creations by Gupta himself.
Cardi B was spotted in a stunning neon green gown with noodle straps and a low-cut sweetheart neckline. The gown was adorned with shimmering sequins and beads. She completed her look with a matching cropped jacket that had a hood covering her head.
