GUWAHATI: In view of the sensitivity of the spread of disinformation, false rumours and other types of violent activities through various social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter; the Manipur government has decided to suspend mobile internet data services, internet/ data services through VPN in the state for five days till 7.45 pm of October 1.
Mobile internet services, which were suspended as ethnic violence erupted in Manipur in May 3, were restored after over four months on September 23.
In an official order, the joint secretary of Manipur home department, Dr Mayengbam Veto Singh stated: “Under the power conferred under Rule 2 of Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services 9PubliEmergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, having satisfied the prevailing situation, the government of Manipur is pleased to order suspension/ curbing of mobile internet data services, and internet data services through VPN in the territorial jurisdiction of Manipur for five days till 7.45 pm of October 1 subject to confirmation by the competent authority within 24 hours and the same will be reviewed before the expiry of the order.”
“The order is passed ex-parte in view of the emergency situation. It shall be published for the information of the public through press and electronic media,” the order stated.
“The order is issued after obtaining approval of the competent authority with immediate effect. All concerned are directed to comply with the order,” it stated.
“Any person found guilty for violation of the order will be liable for legal action,” it added.
