Guwahati August 16, 2024: In response to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata, India, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide shutdown of hospital services, igniting widespread protests and raising urgent concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals across the country.
The IMA, representing over 400,000 doctors, announced that the 24-hour shutdown would take place on Saturday, affecting most hospital departments except for essential services such as emergency care.
