Badgujar Village, Baksa,February 16, 2024:In a significant move against the persistent illegal liquor trade, the Barama police executed a successful raid, leading to the confiscation of 72 cartons of illicit alcohol from the residence and shop of Harendranath Basumatary in Badgujar village, Baksa district. The operation, orchestrated by a substantial police team under the vigilant supervision of Baksa District Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and the Officer-in-Charge of Barama Police Station, resulted in the dismantling of longstanding illegal liquor vends.
The confiscated liquor, traced back to both Bhutan and India, holds substantial value, amounting to lakhs of rupees. This crackdown delivers a severe blow to the illicit alcohol trade that has plagued the region for an extended period. Notably, Harendranath Basumatary, despite being specially-abled, was actively engaged in running this illegal liquor business from his residence.
Speaking on the operation, the Officer-in-Charge of Barama Police Station commented, “We conducted a raid at the premises of Harendranath Basumatary and uncovered 72 cartons of illegal liquor. Basumatary failed to produce any valid documents upon inquiry, leading to the immediate seizure of the contraband. This operation is timely, especially with impending elections, and we are dedicated to intensifying our efforts with further raids.”
The seized alcohol, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 82,000, has been securely transported to the Barama Police Station as evidence. This successful operation not only curtails the illegal liquor trade but also underscores the commitment of law enforcement to maintain the integrity of the region, particularly as the electoral season approaches. The authorities are resolute in their determination to eradicate such illicit activities and ensure a safer environment for the community.
