Golaghat District, Assam – January 3, 2024:In the wake of a devastating accident in Assam’s Golaghat district that resulted in the loss of at least 12 lives, the state government has swiftly responded by implementing a new set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) aimed at ensuring the safety of picnickers. The incident, which occurred in dense morning fog, has prompted authorities to take proactive measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Under the newly issued SOP, buses transporting passengers for picnic purposes will only be allowed to operate after the morning fog clears and must arrive at their destinations before the evening fog descends. The move comes as a response to the challenges posed by reduced visibility during early morning hours, which played a significant role in the recent accident.
Addressing the media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the need for caution and urged people to avoid embarking on picnics too early in the morning. “Today, the state police have issued an SOP which states that buses can only operate after the fog clears in the morning and must arrive before the fog clears in the evening,” said CM Sarma.
Highlighting the hazards associated with early morning travel, CM Sarma stated, “At 4:30 AM in the morning, due to fog, nothing can be seen. Therefore, people should refrain from starting their journeys for picnics at such early hours.”
The tragic incident that occurred earlier serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers during adverse weather conditions. The government’s decision to implement these new safety measures aims to mitigate risks and enhance the safety of picnickers across the state.
In addition to the fog-related restrictions, the SOP may also include guidelines for ensuring the proper maintenance and condition of vehicles used for picnic purposes. The state government is actively working to create awareness among the public about the importance of adhering to these safety measures to prevent further accidents.
As Assam mourns the lives lost in the recent tragedy, the implementation of these safety protocols reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and preventing similar incidents in the future. The cooperation of the public in adhering to these guidelines is crucial to ensuring the success of these safety measures and preserving the well-being of all picnickers in the region.
