Agartala, February 2, 2024:In a shocking incident that unfolded in the Amtali Bazar area near Agartala city, a 23-year-old youth named Sayan Bhowmik lost his life in a brutal altercation with shop owner Samrat Debnath. The incident occurred in broad daylight on February 2, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to West District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar, the confrontation stemmed from a heated argument between Samrat Debnath, who owns a tire shop, and Sayan Bhowmik, an employee of another shop nearby. The dispute revolved around Samrat’s girlfriend, escalating quickly into a violent altercation.
“This afternoon in the Amtali Bazar area next to Agartala-Sabroom National Highway, under Amtali Police Station, a heated altercation started between the accused Samrat Debnath and Sayan Bhowmik about Samrat’s girlfriend. At some point, the argument turned violent. Later, in a rage, Samrat assaulted Sayan on his head with a hammer and rod. Immediately, Sayan fell to the ground and died on the spot,” explained Superintendent Kumar.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that nearby shopkeepers attempted to intervene, but the presence of weapons in Samrat’s hands deterred anyone from getting closer. The brutal attack unfolded despite the efforts of those witnessing the altercation.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Amtali police station dispatched a large police force and a forensic team to the scene. Sayan Bhowmik’s lifeless body, lying in a pool of blood, was recovered and subsequently sent to Tripura Medical College and BRAM Teaching Hospital for further examination.
In a swift response, the police apprehended Samrat Debnath and confiscated the weapons used in the assault. Samrat was promptly presented before the court, where authorities sought police remand for further interrogation.
The tragic incident has left the Amtali community in shock, prompting discussions about the need for increased awareness on conflict resolution and the dangers of resorting to violence. The court proceedings will shed light on the circumstances leading to the brutal killing, as the community grapples with the loss of a young life in such a senseless manner.
