GUWAHATI: Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Deka Sunday recollected his close relationship with Assam Police in his stint of three decades with IB and said that he never failed to mention the role of Assam Police in handling various issues including militancy and volatile law and order situations in various national and international forums.
Addressing as the chief guest at the Assam Police Day function at the 4th APBN headquarters at Kahilipara here, Deka complimented the entire Assam Police for all round achievements in various fields and spoke about the recent infrastructural developments and recruitment rallies to fill up more than 15 thousand posts of Assam Police.
“I feel greatly honoured to be part of this auspicious occasion. I had the opportunity to work with Assam Police in a major part of my professional career and from that experience, I was able to move ahead in my career ladder,” Deka said.
“I feel extremely proud of Assam Police as it has major contributions although it has not received the due recognition it needed. But be it a national or international level meets or gatherings, I never shy away from appreciating Assam Police. Thus, I am extremely honoured and take pride in being part of this august gathering,” Deka also said.
“Assam Police have been working towards the nation since its inception in 1951 and continue to render their service with full dedication. Assam Police is an inseparable part of the state. Assam Police irrespective of class, creed, caste or sex have been rendering their services with full conviction and dedication and fulfilling their duties of providing protection to the people of Assam as well as fighting crime,” he said.
“Time and again Assam Police have made immense sacrifices and extended their support for the upliftment of society. Several Assam Police jawans have laid down their lives for the safety of the people” he also said.
Deka further appreciated the Assam Police for successfully tackling crime related to drug trafficking, crime against women, cyber crime or cattle smuggling, and said it has helped the state to move ahead progressively.
“Some of the major changes witnessed in Assam Police has been the recruitment process. In recent times more than 15,000 youngsters have been recruited in the state police force. Additionally, steps have been taken for transfer of police officials as per requirement,” he further said.
“The major contribution of Assam Police has been bringing peace to the state. Due to exceptional and commendable steps taken by Assam Police, several rebel and armed militant groups have laid down their arms and joined the mainstream, thus ringing in peace and harmony in the state. Such positive developments help raise hope among the people of the state,” he added.
In his address, DGP GP Singh paid homage to more than 900 police personnel who had laid down their lives in the line of their duties.
A ceremonial parade was organized with the participation of 12 platoons including the women commando, Mounted Police and Assam Police brass Band platoons.
Earlier, IGP Nitul Gogoi administered the oath to all the police personnel present on the occasion.
Senior police officers, retired police officers, and senior state government officers attended the celebration of Assam Police Day which is observed to mark the day when the first Indian Imperial police officer KR Choudhury assumed the charge of head of Assam Police in 1951.
