GUWAHATI: In its continued drive against corruption and grat cases, the sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption (DVAC) arrested a block development officer (BDO) for receiving Rs 10 thousand as a bribe from a person in Central Assam’s Hojai district on Sunday.
The accused BDO Sewali Chakravorty of Binakandi Development Block demanded Rs 2 lakh as a bribe from an individual for releasing payments of works completed by his brother.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the individual approached the DVAC to take necessary legal action.
“A trap was laid today, by a team from the DVAC. Sewali Chakravorty, BDO of Binakandi Block was caught red-handed at 3:15 pm immediately after she accepted Rs 10 thousand as part of the demanded bribe in her car on the National Highway at Niz Kathiatoli in Nagaon district,” police said.
“The bribe money was recovered from her possession and was seized accordingly, in the presence of independent witnesses,” they said.
Finding sufficient evidence against the public servant, the team arrested her and a case was registered in ACB Police Station vide ACB PS case No 83/2023 under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).
