With the team management backing the unorthodox batsman up to the hilt, Surya has been given a new role.
Despite getting a lot of chances, India’s Mr 360 degree batsman Suryakumar Yadav has performed miserably in ODIs.
The aggressive batter averages just six while batting at No. 4 position. However, with the team management backing the unorthodox batsman up to the hilt, Surya has been given a new role in the team.
The No.4 position is a crucial position for India. India had hoped that SKY (as Suryakumar is popularly known) would own the spot. However, SKY has failed to impress at the position forcing the team management to change the tack. They are now hopeful that at No.6 position, Sury can play his attacking T20 style and will be at his best when fewer overs are at his disposal. He averages 18.25 at No.6 at a strike rate of 107.35 from four games.
Surya was given the opportunity to bat at number four position in first ODI, but he could manage to score only 19 runs. However, in the second ODI he batted down at number six scoring 24 runs.
As per sources, the new selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar, coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma had a long discusion in the Caribbean and they all felt they should use Surya’s style of play in death overs. The team management believes that Surya is a special talent and there are few players in world cricket who can play all around the park as Suryakumar can hit against pace and spin. Surya can be a great utility for the team in the forthcoming ODI World Cup 2023 to be played in India.
