KOKRAJHAR, 25.01.2024:In a significant development, Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Parliament, and prominent leader of [Political Party], met with the local leadership of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union to discuss the long-standing demand of the Koch Rajbongshi community to be granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Koch Rajbongshi community, currently classified as an Other Backward Class (OBC), has been fervently seeking ST status, citing their unique socio-economic and cultural identity. The community’s aspirations were heightened by a promise made by the Prime Minister during his visit to the state a decade ago. The Prime Minister had assured them that they would be granted special category status within six months. However, a decade later, the Koch Rajbongshi people are still waiting for the fulfillment of this promise.
During the meeting, Rahul Gandhi attentively listened to the delegation’s concerns and aspirations. He empathized with their long wait and assured them of his commitment to addressing their demands. Rahul ji highlighted the need for a comprehensive national caste census to accurately determine the numbers and socio-economic status of the Koch Rajbongshi community.
Addressing the gathering, Rahul Gandhi stated, “A full national caste census is essential to provide a clear and accurate picture of the numbers and socio-economic status of the Koch Rajbongshi community. This data will be instrumental in understanding the unique challenges faced by the community and will pave the way for informed decisions regarding their demand for Scheduled Tribe status.”
